Most cities are experiencing significant changes as a result of technological advances driven by the lighting industry. Today, those responsible for lighting in cities seek quality lights that adhere to the new values of the 21st century, such as energy efficiency or ecological design. This has led to the idea that streetlamps are no longer lighting points that merely serve to illuminate, with which humans are incapable of interacting beyond the on and off switch. What type of street lighting systems do we want?

As far as town or street lighting is concerned, the current social, economic and cultural situation has set certain guidelines in which the following factors are all important:

• Quantity and quality lighting appropriate to conducting normal activities in towns, villages and roads at night.
